Who You Like In A Movie/Book Says A Lot About You?

I discovered over time that it wasn't a mere coincidence I always gravitated towards “powerful female characters” , you know the tough, feared, strong, sharp ones.…whether they were villains or not…they were always so appealing to me.

The cute girls, girly girls, soft girls etc hardly ever appealed to me and in no time, I realized why…(story for another day)

The characters we love often reflect parts of ourselves—our values, hidden desires, fears, or even qualities we wish we had.

For you it may be the rebellious underdog, the wise mentor, or the misunderstood antihero….

Regardless of what you like, my point is it is more than just a random preference. Who you like in a movie reveals something deeper about who you are.

Let’s break it down.

Why Do We Connect with Certain Characters?

1. The Mirror Effect: Seeing Ourselves in Them

There’s a psychological concept called the identification theory”, which suggests that we unconsciously connect with characters who mirror aspects of our personality or life experiences.

For example, if you’ve always felt like an outsider (the different/ weird one), you might be drawn to characters like Wednesday Addams or Loki—people who exist on the fringes of society.

If you value intelligence and strategy, you might admire the likes of Sherlock Holmes.

If you love to challenge the status quo & live care freely, Jack Sparrow would definitely appeal to you.

It’s not just about admiration—it’s about recognition. These characters feel familiar because, in some way, they remind us of ourselves.

2. The Ideal Self: Who We Wish We Could Be

Growing up I was bullied a lot and was told I needed to stop being so soft, always crying and reporting to authorities, instead of fighting for myself.

Knowing this, it became no surprise that I fell in love with Wonder Woman and the whole Amazon story.

Those women mirrored something I desperately desired at the time. I wanted to be strong too, fierce and somewhat scary just like them…

Sometimes, we don’t see ourselves in a character—but we see who we want to be. This aligns with Albert Bandura’s social learning theory, which says that we learn by observing and imitating others.

If you’re shy but love confident, outspoken characters like Kevin Hart or Olivia Pope, it might be because you secretly wish you could embody their boldness.

Your brain is drawn to their qualities as a way of mentally rehearsing how you might act if you were more like them.

It’s almost like a subconscious training ground—watching them makes you feel like, maybe, you could be that way too.

3. Emotional Catharsis: Processing Feelings Through Fiction

I was wrecked by the way The Originals ended. I cried my eyes out, you'd think something actually happened.

Seeing how much Klaus, Elijah & Rebecca cared & showed up for each other as siblings spoke to an emotional need I've always carried.

As an only child, I've always wanted siblings. I always craved the sense of belonging it provided.

Lol it's hard to explain in comprehensible words.

But the point is this fictional movie helped me identify and process my emotions. That’s because of emotional catharsis—a psychological process where we use fiction to experience and release emotions.

These stories give us a safe space to explore emotions we might not even realize we’re holding inside.

4. Archetypes and Personality Types

Carl Jung, a famous psychologist, believed that all stories are built around universal archetypes—recurring character types that represent fundamental human traits.

Here are a few examples:

- The Hero (Harry Potter, Thor, Simba) – If you love hero characters, you might see yourself as (or aspire to be) someone who overcomes adversity and stands up for what’s right.

- The Trickster (Jack Sparrow, the Genie from Aladdin) If you love chaotic, rule-breaking characters, you might have a rebellious streak or enjoy challenging the status quo.

- The Caregiver (Gaius from Merlin, Marlin from Finding Nemo) – If you’re drawn to nurturing characters, you probably value deep connections and protecting those you love.

- The Antihero (Venom, Klaus) – If you love morally complex characters, it might mean you appreciate complexities and believe people aren’t just "good" or "bad."

Your favorite character could hint at the archetype that resonates with you most—whether it’s because it reflects who you are, who you admire, or who you’re becoming.

Wrapping up:

The characters you connect with are never random. Whether they reflect your inner world, inspire your future selves, or give you an emotional release, they always serve a purpose.

So next time you find yourself obsessed with a particular character in a movie, a book or even in real life, ask yourself why.

What is it about them that pulls you in? What do they make you feel? What parts of them feel familiar—or aspirational?

Your favorite character might just be holding up a mirror to a part of yourself you’ve never fully seen or explored before.

That being said, who is your favorite fictional character and why do you think you're so drawn to them?
